I love "Pope Joan". It's extraordinary!! And surfaced such strong emotions from me that I ended up sobbing in one melancholic momment. And believe me I don't sob easy. A elaborate story, wonderfully written. My favorite book of all time. I can't wait for the book based in France in the 17th century.

I have to admit, I love the book. It touched me in a way a cannot explain. I just fisishe reading it for the seccond time and I say it is absolutly wonderfull. It has nothing to do with gender, I just think this book is a gift to all of mankind. I learn from it, that one can achieve everything if he or she does what is to be done. And always have a view for those around you, life is to make this world a better place for all of us. No matter who you are, or what you are, male or female. I would like to thank Donna W. Cross again for writting such a wonderfull novel.

After reading "Pope Joan" our Circle of Friends Book Club met and the brilliant and skillful author, Donna Woolfolk-Cross joined us via speakerphone! The experience was extraordinary and incomparable. What an incredible once-in-a-life-time experience to have the author's justification and rationalization of characters and circumstances explained to us in such a clever fashion. The commentary and interpretations I received from our Circle of Friends have been significant and remarkable... "Getting to pick the mind of an author has given me a whole new perspective on the joy of reading", "Loved having her with us, wish we could have more author's doing the same", "Being given the chance to interact with the author of a book that I adored made me feel so spoiled", "It just completed and enveloped a good reading with a big fat gift", "I am so grateful", "What better way to have the author's original thoughts, it helped give us the reader a much better prospective". Once again, thank you Ms. Woolfolk-Cross for your enthusiastic support towards reading groups.

This book should be required reading for all girls over the age of 13 throughout the world and then have discussion followup in social classes for "women only". Instilling hope, courage and a hunger for knowledge that will indeed change the world...for women everywhere. I am a fan forever and like Jacki Fox changed forever because of my two heroines...Pope Joan and Donna Woolfolk Cross. Both are "a friend indeed". As long as you and Pope Joan continue to carry the CROSS Donna, we will NOT march into hell. Freedom to choose who and what we will be is one of the most defining moments of our lives though we don't know that for a very long time. Wish I had known this 50 years ago. I promise that my 2 beautiful granddaughters will know. Thank you my friend.

You were without a doubt an absolute hit on Thursday night.  Thanks so much
for attending our meeting via speakerphone.  We wanted to send you a note and a
picture of our group that we took that night and wondered if you could
provide me with an address to forward it to.  (Unfortunately we did not take
it on a digital camera so the computer is not a possible mode of transport)
Thanks again for the great evening.  We wish you luck in the upcoming months
as your book becomes a movie!
Cheers from Laurie on behalf of your devoted fans in Calgary"

I can't believe I'm so late in thanking Donna for the wonderful speaker phone conversation my book club had with her in late October. She's a delightful conversationalist and we covered a variety of topics from who's to star in the movie of her book to our mutual enjoyment of Historical novels. My group especially enjoyed her description of her research for the book. I've been promoting her book and conversations far and wide, because they are both wonderful. Thank you, Marily

We were all impressed with the gracious way in which you handle these chats. We will definitely recommend the book to other clubs and other readers. All the best, Susan and the rest of the club.

My best friend and I have formed a book club to keep in touch more often (she lives in CA and I in Germany), and we have chosen Pope Joan for our first book. We are enjoying it thoroughly, and though a phone chat would be lovely, it is not practical really. But I do have a question. I live near Ingelheim and Mainz and have been to Fulda. I have become a little obsessed with figuring out Dorstadt however. The only Dorstadt that still exists is near Braunschweig Germany, which I believe would have been Saxony at that time, however it is near a river that could have brought the Vikings. But it seems rather far from the other cities, especially since they went to St. Denis for the fair, which sounds more French. So, could you please tell me if it is the same Dorstadt or if the one in the story no longer exists? Since Gerold served at the mallus in a Wesphalian village, I thought perhaps they lived in Westphalia, which I would imagine to be further East, though I cannot find a picture of the land divisions in my German atlas from that time period. Thanks for your help. I greatly anticipate your next novel. Respectfully Yours, Michelle Tepper

At the age of thirteen I was given a book by my Grandmother that would alter the course of my life forever. That book was pope Joan. The book Pope Joan was an inspiration to me to fulfill all my dreams, and let no obstacles stand in my way. The main character, Joan, gave me hope and a new found understanding of what I will be able to achieve if I work hard enough and set my mind on my future goals. I am now 18 years old and a National Honor Society student. I am pursuing my goal to become a Doctor of nuclear medicine. Throughout the course of my life I know that the Book Pope Joan has been one of the main influences of my high school years. Also, the author of Pope Joan Donna Woolfolk Cross who I have met personally, has encouraged me as well as the epic hero in her book. She has given me the strength to achieve goals that I thought were once out of my grasp. I will never forget Donna and the book Pope Joan for it had changes me in so many astounding ways as a young women.

Donna Thank you so much for joining in our discussion last night of Pope Joan. It was such a tremendous privilege and an honor to speak with the author firsthand. I know that the members who were unable to get a copy of the book are going to be cringing with envy when they hear how well last night's meeting went. You must plead with Ballantine Books to send more copies of Pope Joan to the local bookstores in GA; as most of us had to shop around at several different Borders and Barnes and Nobles to finally get our hands on a copy. How are we to reccomend Pope Joan to our friends if they have no hope of ever finding a copy? You must, on your adoring fans behalf, make this plea to your publishers. Surely, you have some connections. Remind them that they are in the business of selling books and that obviously, Pope Joan is a seller! Thank you again for sharing not only your time but also your profound insight to a wonderfully inspriing character. Yours, (anxiously awaiting your second novel), Natalie Fischer

Hi Donna, Recently I met you at the UMBA show in St. Paul. I was so impressed with your enthusiasm. And I am also impressed with your book. I devoured it very quickly and have recommended to our reading group at our store. Our leader, Connie has asked that I send the following to you: "Donna, I lead a women's reading group in Wautoma, Wisconsin and we have chosen your book for March 20, 2003. Our group meets from 5:30-6:30pm CST. We would love to have a chat with you regarding Pope Joan on that date. Would that work for you? Would another date be better? We meet the 3rd Thursday of each month. Mary Santi, whom you met at UMBA in St. Paul recently, recommended your novel - as did another friend of mine who lives in Colorado. How nice! Mary and her cousin, Nancy, are co-owners of Bookworms! in Wautoma. Two really neat women. We meet at their bookstore. Conveniently, they order the books for us. You should have an upsurge in book sales around the New Year, and likely before Christmas. I look forward to speaking with you. Connie"

Ms. Cross: I have learned about your wonderful conference calls from a fellow librarian in our system. Jane Rosenfeld at the Clifton Branch. Would it be possible to arrange for a similiar call with the Book Club that I do in the Main Library of the Cincinnati system? We meet on the first Monday of each month, and I'm making up the schedule for 2003 now. We would read Pope Joan as that month's selection. The only months that would not be possible are January and July. The other first Mondays in the ten months are free. Thank you for your nice service. I hope we can arrange this. Respectfully, Barb Behrends, Librarin, Fiction Dept., Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

Hi, Donna! Thank you so much speaking with us in Ann Arbor last night. We had an absolute ball talking with you by speakerphone and enjoyed all your juicy insight into Pope Joan -- both pre- and post-press. It was a delight and honor to have you chat with us and we have all vowed to try more than ever to spread the word (not our books) about Pope Joan. Incidentally, I belong to two book groups and would love to have you join in a meeting with them as well. I'll let you know. THANKS again, Your fans in A2

We would be thrilled to speak to you that night. Please let me know soon so that I can include the date in our book talk schedule. I have chosen Pope Joan for that date no matter what happens, as it is SUCH a wonderful book! But having you available to speak to would be a wonderful bonus. Thank you, Nanette Bulebosh, Kiel Public Library director

Hi, Donna! I (we) can't thank you enough for the wonderful chat our book group had with you by speakerphone! It truly was delightful and so informative. Although we all already loved Pope Joan, we all agreed we loved it even more after talking to you. We have and will continue to pass on to others the recommendation (not the book!) to read Pope Joan. We'll look forward to reading your next novel and to seeing the Pope Joan movie. Thanks again for taking the time and for sharing all of your information with us. Best regards, Amy

Donna, I can't begin to tell you how much our book club enjoyed our tele-conference with you! It was so enlightening to hear what went into the research of Pope Joan. Personally, I can't imagine the Latin poem you persevered through to bring us the medicinal remedies of our heroine's time! What an incredible discovery along with the monastery's herbal garden map! We were also captivated by the actual history and facts about Pope Joan, and loved hearing from the "horse's mouth" about things we didn't pick up on when we read the story. You wrote such a gripping story to explain such an extraordinary piece of history. More questions did avail themselves after we hung up, and I suspect that some of the members will be posting them on your website for answers. Thank you again for joining our book club meeting. I dare say that you probably won't need to make yourself available for your next novel, though we would love to have you anyway! We're looking forward to both the movie, Pope Joan, and for your next novel (no pressure)! Best of success, Bonnie Guski Alpharetta, GA

Donna - I was given your name and the title of your book by a colleague of mine at a networking event. Like you - I too was published by (Three Rivers Press)Crown and was terribly unhappy with the lack of effort on behalf on my book Power Tools for Women: Plugging into the Essential Skills for Work and Life (02/02). As a speaker and Management Consultant, I am working very hard just to get the word out and it's very hard to get it out beyond the sound of my own voice. Your story is motivational for me, and I ran right out to buy your book. I'd love to know more about how you got the word out, how much time you spend on the phone with book groups and learn from your experience. While no two situations are alike and neither is the remedy, I'm looking for ideas that will put some buzz into the excitement that my book and my presentations and programs provide. Congratulations for creating your own path through the publishing jungle. Joni Daniels

Dear Donna! I have just started to read your book and I am already sure it will be a late night! In my swedish class we are suppose to read a novel about the middle age and until tomorrow our teacher wants us to introduce the author of the book we have chosen. I have tried to find out more about you but I am not satisfide. I dont know when and where you were born, your family etc. Why you wrote a book about middle age as your first novel. If you have time I would be pleased to have some more information about your past life. It is not easy to be famous, you have to hang out your life to anyone...! I have to apologize for my spelling but I hope you understand my query anyway. Thanks for your time so far, hope to hear from you soon! My book is waiting for me and it is late night in Sweden. brgds Beatrice Hansson (a grown up student, who has intended to change her life)

Dear Ms. Cross, I read "Pope Joan" one year ago and was thoroughly entranced with the entire theme of the book. I had difficulty putting it down and couldn't stop reading until the end. Your writing style is easy to read, yet grabs you so you want to finish the book, but yet, don't want it to end. The perfect book, in my estimation. I have selected "Pope Joan" for my book group and would be honored if we were selected by you for a 'phone interview'. Our book club has been in existence for almost four years and we call ourselves the "19th Hole" because we are all golfers. Our regular meeting is the third Wednesday of the month, but, of course, we would change the date to accomodate you. My meeting is scheduled for October 16, 2002, 6:30 p.m. I think it is wonderful that you take the time to speak to your readers and this would add such enjoyment to our meeting. Thank you for considering us. Sincerely, Sandi Ide

Wow. "Pope Joan" -- what a book! Once I got started with it, I could not put it down. The story is sensational and sensationally exciting and educational. It also intensely thought provoking, not just in terms of the high level story but also from fundamental philosophical and theological perspectives. I have not felt so hard hit by one book since I read Atlas Shrugged more than twenty years ago.

I will be teaching a class on Women in Power this summer and was delighted to learn of Pope Joan. Would love to correspond with you about other Medieval Women besides those you mentioned. I have "hit" the biggies - Joan of Arc, Eleanor of Acquitane, Elizabeth, Catherine, etc. My parameters consist of "real power" or power behind the throne, but not just as a "wife of". For example, I am a Byzantinist (my focus will be nusmismatic) and I will use Theodora, wife of Justinian the Great, becuase, tho she is not reflected on the coinage, her real power was in steadying him on the verge of abandonment of Constantinople. Had he fled, he would not have gone on to capture and recapture the Byzantine boundaries which reached their zenith under him. (Run on sentences, sorry). Any way, I look forward to reading your book and would enjoy a response

Dear Donna - Thank you so much for participating in our book club discussion this past Sunday - it was such a pleasure and a rare privilege! I especially enjoyed hearing from you about the research and initial manuscript stages of novel writing - plus I don't think I've ever fully appreciated the amount of commitment and tenacity required of the author to see the initial draft through the publication(!!), distribution and sales process. We learned so much about the creative process I also wanted to express my appreciation for your time and energy in our discussion - you were so gracious and generous with your time! I hope that other reading groups take advantage of this opportunity to discuss Pope Joan (and your other future novels) with you -- what a great experience. I'm going to call the Holland, MI library and advise the reading club liaison about this opportunity as well, since the group has selected Pope Joan for August. Thanks again for joining us on Sunday - we learned so much! We can't wait for the movie! Sincerely, Laura

We take turns in assigning a book for the month -- my choice is "Pope Joan" for this coming September -- which I will assign at our next meeting on August 13th -- would like to discuss it with you sometime before that... Expect to buy at least four books -- hopefully at discount... Regards, Robby

Thank you so much for "meeting" with our Border's discussion group by speakerphone. We truly enjoyed speaking with you about Pope Joan and are looking forward to your next literary endeavor. Your knowledge and enthusiasm made for a delightful evening. We are especially grateful for your perseverence in light of the technical difficulties we experienced with the telephone.

Hi Donna Well aren't we clever! We did it! Thank you so much for chatting by speakerphone with our reading group "Down Under" despite the hour - it was certainly a first for us . We have had an author attend our bookclub before but never a speakerphone conference!! Much appreciated. Everyone really enjoyed the book. Loved the setting, and the way you tied it in with what is known of 9th century history. And coming across Colmar in Ch 13 was wonderful for me. Phil and I lived there for 18 months back in the 70's - a beautiful, picturesque medieval town with heaps of religious artifacts. Should you ever decide to visit Australia (and of course you should!), come to Brisbane. Look me up and I'll show you around. Until then, or the next book, I'll say 'au revoir et merci' - and of course we'll start guessing the name of the next heroine! Cheers Ruth

Donna- We wanted you to see the festive atmosphere you inspired! I'm sending you pictures of our "Pope Joan" book club meeting. We are all wearing white spired pope hats, with our names 'Pope Patti', 'Pope Deb', 'Pope Lois'...in gold calligraphy, and white ribboned streamers running down our backs...(the Vatican has nothing on us). We had lively discussions on women in history, religion, womens rights, health, politics, family,... loved your characters! ... while we munched on 'Arn's' blue veined cheeses, sipped wine, and passed out vials of 'Virgin's Milk'...maybe we are just a wacky bunch of gals, but we sure found your work stimulating! Pope Joan parties rule!

My book club, Bitches with Books and Booze, has chosen "Pope Joan" for its most recent selection--it was my personal suggestion. I have read it several times now and love it more and more each time--I can honestly say it has taken a firm place as the top 5 books I have ever had the honor to read. I believe the women in my group will enjoy it as well. We would LOVE to set up a meeting to speak with you via speakerphone--if that is still an possibility. Please let me know what I can do to set this up. :~P

Dear Donna! Many times I´d heard about this "unbelievably great" novel "Pope Joan" until I couldn´t help but read it myself. It´s better than I´d ever thought. I´m so impressed by this woman Joan and by the way you´ve written about her. I live very close to the town where Joan was born in Germany. A few days ago I went there and talked to somebody from this town (Ingelheim). He knew about the story and he said that it´s definetely true, but there is no eveidence at all about Joan in her home town nowadays. I was really angry. Whatta woman - but instead of remembering her they do all to keep her existance in the dark. Of course I know why, but I can´t take it. Thanx to your book I got to know this incredible woman and I hope I can even collect more informations. I don´t know where to start but I try. Thank you again for your novel (by the way - I made some promotion for it in Ingelheim)! It gave me some exciting and interesting reading hours. Congratulations that your book made it to the movies! I´m looking forward to watch it. I would like to say sorry for possible mistakes - my English isn´t that good anymore. All the best to you. Yours Simone

Hi Donna, Our reading group was blown away by Pope Joan! Seriously! We met at 7:30 and didn't stop talking until 12:30 and only because someone realized what time it was... we could have talked for hours. Of all the books our club has read and discussed, Pope Joan is a top favorite, and my personal favorite. We read two classics a year and the discussions on your book far outdid any classic we read! It sparked discussion of gender bias, the Church, personal development--the restraints put on one's soul's dreams. Thanks for writing such a wonderful book!

I have finished reading the book this morning at 3 am and I was fascinated. Thank you for telling the story about her, I had no idea this had ever happened and I am so happy that I have found out because she seems to have been a very interesting person. I had started thinking about all the things that the other characters do and say, all the ideas that people had back then about women..It is so wonderful to see how far we have come, but also, it is sad to see that so many are still regarded to be as ignorant and incapable as Joan proved women not to be...

Hello Donna from Dajana from Germany, I read your book "pope Joan" five times. I love your writing style. Your choice of words is amazing. In this story I saw a true love story between Joan and Gerold (in Germany Johanna). Your description of this love moves me to tears. Furthermore I like the historical facts, because I love the history of our world so much. I have about 200 books about history. In my free time I write books and poems. One poem is published. Maybe I have luck in the future and one of my books will publish. In Germany it is difficult to publish a book. I have heard "Pope Joan" will adapt to the movies. Unfortunately the movies often are not so good like the books. I hope so much that the movie will be good - very well. :) Words fail me, because the story and your writing style are fantastic and incredible. I wish you the best for your future and I hope to hear from you soon. xxx

Hi, Here is what I wrote in my reading log regarding your novel, Pope Joan: "The author takes historical information regarding the alleged Pope Joan and creates an interesting, entertaining story on how the main character came to be Pope. A couple of convenient events during climatic moments test your believability (unless you accept it as, say, divine intervention), but are definitely within the realm of possibility. Well-researched; the author's note was most illuminating regarding the factual information she had to work with and what she improvised on." I rated it a 9 out of 10. I'm going to suggest Pope Joan as a nomination for my local reading group; I'll be sure to get back in touch with you if it is selected!

Also if you could help me figure out where Ingelheim was in relation to Rome that would also be greatly appreciated. Your book is one of the best books I've ever read and I hope you wil respond soon. Thank you

You kindly replied very promptly, but then I left town on an extended business trip before I had received a confirmation from our group's host for that meeting. Now I'm still out of town but I did hear back from her, so this is to confirm the date and time you'd specified. We're looking forward to the conversation with you on June 15. Please let me know that we're on. Thanks so much. --Yvonne

Dear Ms. Cross, I am a high school Global History teacher who is on the Board of Directors for the Central Council for the Social Studies based in Syracuse, New York. We are very interested in seeing if you would be willing to present at our fall conference, Tuesday, October 29th at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse. We are an organization of social studies teachers. We have a variety of speakers address us on scholarly and educational matters. I, and others on the Board, absolutely loved Pope Joan. We are interested in the historical research behind your book, and any novel of an historical nature. Exactly what is the process of an author who writes an historical novel? How much is fact? How much is fiction? These would be the kinds of issues we would love to see addressed. Would you be interested in this type of speaking engagement? There would be 300-400 teachers and also representatives from the New York State Education Department in attendence for the entire conference. The forum is set up so that there are a variety of programs going on at the same time and teachers select the program which best suits them. A presentation is about 1 hour in length. We have some morning presentations and some early afternoon presentations so that we would not be imposing on an entire day. There is so much interest in your book. We believe that you would be a great addition for our fall conference. Linda C. Hi Donna, I cannot believe that you are such a great sport as far as willing to talk to book discussion groups via speaker phone. The Elmwood Park Public Library is having their monthly book discussion tonight and we will be discussing your book. If I only I had known about this earlier I could have given you fair warning to call us. I am still going to give you our information in case you have nothing better to do tonight: We are having dessert and coffee tonight so we will probably go until at least 8:20 like we did last month without the coffee. It will really make everybody happy, happy if you call. Sincerely, Molly Perry (bookleader)

Hi Donna~~ My book club in Charlotte, NC, so enjoyed your speakerphone chat with us last month. Everyone is still talking about it, and Pope Joan has been recommended to everyone's mother's, sister's, and friend's book clubs! Thank you so much for sharing your time with us and giving us such a memorable experience. I took up your challenge to guess the heroine of your next novel, set in 17th century France. Since I knew nothing about this era, I had to spend quite a bit of time researching it. My best guess for your next heroine is Marie de Brinon: headmistress of the girls' school at St. Cyr; author of the original words that became "God Save the King"; assistant to Louise Hollandine, Abbess of Maubuisson; and correspondent with the German philosopher Leibniz and the French bishop Bossuet in a valiant attempt to reunify the Catholic and Protestant churches. Please let me know if I am anywhere near the mark!

Donna, You might remember me from a book chat you did a few months ago with TheBookSpot (a yahoo group). You also responded with a rather lengthy e-mail to my post in your guestbook (which thrilled me to death, by the way!). I know you're terribly busy as the word surrounding Pope Joan spreads like wildfire through various book groups. The reason I'm writing is to ask if you've ever been spotlighted in Book Magazine? I'm about to hit my senior year in college and in my Advanced Non-Fiction Composition class we're required to attempt publication of an article, short story, etc. I would really like to write a feature about Pope Joan, its popularity among book groups, and the word of mouth popularity of the book. I just wanted to see if it is ok with you, and ask if I might send a few questions in the next couple of weeks as I write the article? If you're too busy, I completely understand, but I'd love the opportunity to share my love of your book and your amazing talent with Book Magazine and its readers. Thanks for your time!!! Dear Donna, THANK YOU SO MUCH for talking with our reading group by speakerphone last night. We loved hearing your voice and learning more about the book, your research, the movie and your next book! The most heart breaking information was the scraping off the ink off the vellum written by the ancient Romans and Greeks with ALL the brilliant knowledge they had amassed, to write out religious homilies. And the most "telling" was the wedding ceremony for Gisla, where she was admonished to "be as a dog" and the husband was to be strong, brave and true--and only beat the wife what she deserved!! When your new book comes out next summer, you can be sure it will be on our reading list in the fall. We can't wait! Thanks again for taking the time to be with us. Each member of our book reading group takes a month to choose a book, and March was mine. I was browsing through the Amazon Reading Group Guides list and saw Pope Joan. It looked interesting, and different from the usual books we read. When I saw that it had a 4 1/2 star rating from 138 reviews,I was impressed. One reviewer commented that this was the first book everyone in her book group liked! We have a pretty diverse group, so I was a little worried some members would think it was too much history, but now that I've read it, I'm pretty sure this may also be our reading group's first book unanimously enjoyed! Thanks for a terrific read!

Hi! I am writing to you because I just finished your book (last night, actually) after my mom had recommended it to me. I loved it! I am a junior in high school in Des Moines, Iowa and I absolutely was thrilled with the notion of a possible female Pope. So thrilled, actually, that I have decided to write my Junior research paper for my english class on the possibility of there being an actual female Pope. I go to a Catholic High School, so I'm hoping to bring new light to people so set on tradition and church culture. I was wondering if you could lead me in the right direction for researching this. Thank you so much for spending part of your life researching Pope Joan so many could learn about her. I am truly inspired! Thanks! Tara

Dear Donna, I heard you on public radio last night and I was fascinated. It came to my mind that many years ago as a high school student in (then) East Germany I read a multivolume novel by Emile Zola. In the part called 'Rome' be deals with the extensive intrigues at the Vatican. I recall that he describes that during the selection and installation of a new pope the presence of the male anatomy is being confirmed. The examiner exclaims "habet" (he has)if he finds what he was looking for. Zola is extremely critical of the goings on at the Vatican (at least in medieval times), but it strikes me that nothing needs to be confirmed that has not been found missing at some time. Do you know anything about this? I am looking forward to reading your book. Ursula Charaf

No idea on this one, however. I really wish I tuned in to the NPR interview. Good luck to you and your writing. I do need to interject that I just finished The Red Tent by Diamant and found that also very intriguing. What we women had to go through to make a statement in the 21st century. Thank you for allowing me a bit of enjoyment in my life.

Dear Donna Cross: To say the least I was quite interested in the content of the program on WPR involving you and Jean Feraca. It explains a lot about the past and suggests something about the present. To me one of the fascinating contradictions is your findings of the Church assiduously erasing evidence of her having existed. Your insights on the nature of the times is the kind of knowledge more of us need to understand the present. Looking Forward To Your Reply Rod Edington

Donna, I am presenting Pope Joan to our book club on Wednesday, April 3, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Pacific time. Would it be possible for you to chat with us by speakerphone during that time? How would we set that up? Your book was one I couldn't put down. As a practicing Catholic, it was disturbing to read about the debauchery of the church at that time. Now I understand why it was called the dark ages. As a retired teacher and former principal, it was exciting to know the lengths Joan would go to become educated. Her logical thinking and ability to brilliantly argue each of her opinions was masterful, thanks to you. What a thought provoking book!

Heard you on Wisconsin Public Radio with Jean Feraca today. As a married Catholic Priest with our small faith community in Nenno, Wisconsin. We honor you and raise you up in prayer. We look forward to the day that women in the Roman Church will have true equity. I was in tears as I listened to your interview because I taught so many talented young women at a local High School - so many to be priest, bishops, and popes - yet the door is closed. It is difficult to work with an institution that says it speaks in behalf of God and denies women the right to ministry. Be well and blessed in your work.

I came across your book in the library a few years ago, read it, and LOVED it - had to go out and buy it! Pope Joan brings to mind another woman who was well-known in her time (17th century) for her intellectual brilliance - Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz of Mexico. At 14 years of age, her intelligence and learning outshone the most learned men of her time. She became a nun simply because, desiring only to study and increase her knowledge, there were no other options available to her. She recognized and fought the rampant misogyny of her day and was an author - almost like the Shakespeare of Mexico. I was wondering if you've heard of her, and also if writing a novel of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and her life would interest you. Thank you again for your wonderful book!

Ms. Haught mentioned that you may have hand-sold every single copy of your book. I think that's true, and -- frankly -- I think it's the best way for an author to make a book successful. I've been handselling books online since 1994 (www.grouchy.com/bookchef/experience.html). It works. It's good for everyone -- readers, authors, publishers, and schools/libraries. It helps make books come alive in community. So good on you. Now I'm heading off to find your book today. Sounds intriguing... All best, Cathy Young

Ms. Cross, My book club has just chosen Pope Joan as our reading selection for July. We meet at Borders in Springfield, PA on the third Monday of each month, which would make our July discussion on the 15th. I am waiting to receive a message from the store manager confirming the availability of a speakerphone for our group. I am hoping that by initiating our discussion now, we can work out all the details in a timely manner. We usually have 25 to 30 members at each meeting, although the opportunity to chat in person with you will undoubtedly increase our numbers. Looking forward to your response and in gratitude for your offer. Yours, Lynda

Dear Ms. Woolfolk Cross, I recently learned from my sister-in-law that you joined her book club via phone. Since my club is currently reading (and enjoying)your book, at the suggestion of my sister-in-law, we would be thrilled if you could join us as well. I apologize for asking at such short notice, but our group meets Sunday, March 17th at 7:00PM. If this is not a convenient time, could you please provide dates that may work for you? We are very excited about the possibility of discussing your work with you. Thank you in advance for your reply. Best regards, Frances Corr

Dear Donna: Thank you so much for speaking at the Oklahoma City Town Hall Meeting last week. I eagerly anticipated your talk and was not disappointed. After the presentation I decided to violate one of my reading axioms. As a rule I do not read books by women. I love women but I do not know what color "puce" is and I have trouble relating to some of the analogies women authors tend to use. I have made exceptions (for which I was well rewarded) for Barbara Tuchmann, and Kathleen Windsor. You can add Cecil Woodham-Smith to the list but I was unaware that she was a woman when I read "The Reason Why". I am sure that you and Pope Joan will fit in quite well with that crowd. I look forward to your next endeavor. Keep up the good work. (Please ladies, do not castigate me for my foolish prejudices as they are just a sign of a weak mind). Sincerely, Ron Heller

Dear Mrs. Woolfolk Cross, I am reading your book Pope Joan and I have some questions. Are you Catholic? What are your views on marriage and men? The part in the book about Gudrun telling Joan to never get married portrays men and marriage as the worst thing you can get involved with. Are you married? Do your feelings resemble those of Gundrun in this matter? My brother gave me this book for Christmas and I was excited thinking it to be in support of the Church, but I am questioning that right now. These were just a few questions I had. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou for your time and good luck with future books! Sincerely, Kevin Baisley

Dear Donna: All the Book Club members join me in a huge thank you for chatting with us by speakerphone. We were so energized and delighted by you and by the book, and we all agreed that yesterday's meeting was our best ever! It was so obvious to us that you are a superb teacher and we wish we could be a "regular" in one of your classes. Please know the welcome mat is always out in Dallas for you, and if you should come for a lecture or even a book signing, you have an invitation to dinner, lunch, breakfast, drinks, or whatever works into your schedule. You have my number, and my e-mail address, and I would be thrilled to hear from you at any time. We were not only captivated by your generosity in sharing your thoughts and research findings with us, but also by your obvious love of people. There was a warm glow in the room when you finished speaking with us, and lots of happy rumblings for the remainder of our day. We await eagerly your next publication, and we are all committed to spreading the "word" to friends . Thank you again. Ginny LaSala

I read Pope Joan about 2 or 3 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have periodically checked the library and bookstore for the latest from you since then, but to no avail. I agree that historical fiction is a great thing to read - History was so boring to me in school, but when it comes alive with developed characters, it is so much more intriguing. So, my question is, what can we look forward to next? And also, are there any other books you recommend? I just finished the second book in "The Kingdom and the Crown" series by Gerald Lund. If you haven't checked these out, you might also enjoy them. Looking forward to hearing from you!

I ran into Mrs. Harris while at Baylor a couple of weeks ago and asked her about the "Pope Joan" movie and about your writing. I am now a junior at Birmingham-Southern College and recently re-read Pope Joan and fell in love with the novel all over again. I am currently in a writing for the Print Media Class and was hoping that it might be possible to arrange either an on the phone or via e-mail interview with you. We are supposed to write a feature piece before the end of the semester and I would love to work on a book review, interview with the author per se of you. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail. I also thought the ending was spectacular. I would like to know what information you had to go on? How much history is there on Pope Joan, because it would seem that you only had a name to go on? Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much i enjoyed the book. Thank you.

Donna, Just wanted to say "thank you ...thank you ...thank you!" From our reading group I am asked to extend our sincere gratitude for your "gift of time" today. What a refreshing change from the ordinary book club meetings! The women were just non-stop chatterers after our speakerphone chat, having gained new insight into the background and beginnings of your work. Often times I have been engrossed in a book to be plagued with questions as to "why" or "how" or "what motivation" led to the writing so just imagine what a pleasure it was to have those questions answered as you say straight from the horses mouth. You truly have a gift for not only writing but for sharing of yourself with others. We are most grateful for your "presence" at our meeting. The members of the St. Rose Book Club ~ Chicopee

I never heard about Pope Joan before, and I was so moved and excited by your book, that I decided to look into it, research , and try to find out more and more about it. It astonished me that hundreds of years passed, but still Joan's story is so relevant, in more ways than one... Oddly enough(...!) I'm not able to find sources about her or the art she must have commissioned as pope,or about her being portrayed in art, though something tells me, she must have been.I'm not about to give up easily...If you have any idea as to sources that might help me to write this research, I'd be more than grateful to hear from you all about it. Thanks a lot, Tami

In April we will meet to discuss Pope Joan. My sister is part of a totally different bookclub in Calgary. They read your book last year and arranged for you to discuss the book with them by speakerphone. She loved the evening and was very impressed with the format and the resulting dialogue. I would like to set up the same opportunity with you in April. We would like the 'meeting' to take place on Saturday April 20 at a time of your convenience. If this day is unavailable to you we would postpone the discussion for another month and arrange for it in May. We are very excited about the opportunity to include you in our discussion about your wonderful book. I look forward to hearing from you. Mary Catherine O'Gorman

We truly enjoyed the opportunity to listen to your ideas and appreciated the opportunity to learn about the research you conducted in the process of writing "Pope Joan". The book was very thought-provoking as was our discussion. After we ended the phone call, we continued to talk Joan and what it must have been like for her. We also appreciated your honesty in the historical changes you made to create a readable tale. I have talked unceasingly about your novel and our chat to family and friends. Hopefully they will soon be accessing your website for a book chat of their own! We are looking forward to reading your next book. We understand it takes place in the 17th century... perhaps the pirate you refer to in one of your footnotes? We might have to buy this one in hardback. None of us will want to wait for the paperback edition!!!! Thanks again for your time and willingness to share your thoughts. We learned a lot and were well entertained in the process! Dear Donna, You were wonderful to talk to last night. Thank you for chatting with our book group by speakerphone. If you ever give up writing (which I sincerely hope you don't even remotely consider) you really should go into public speaking. You're entertaining, insightful, intelligent and we agreed that we could listen to the sound of your voice for hours. Several of us stayed on after your call and discussed why there are so few "all men" book clubs. Most of us have boys and so we are toying with the idea of starting a kids book club for them. We decided that early intervention may be the key. This should be fun. We hope that one day they may end up discussing Pope Joan. Thank you for your list of favorite authors and books. I'm looking forward to delving into some more good historical fictions. Please add these to your web site when you redo it. Thank you again and good luck on your future endeavors. Laura

Dear Donna Cross, If I were going to write a novel about a 17th century Parisian woman (the challenge you gave us Mon. evening, the 28th of January, 2002, at the Burlington book group), I'd choose Mme De Sevigne as her life struck me as so fascinating. Because of all the writings of hers that are still available, she'd be not only an easy research but also so fascinating a subject. We're hoping that she is your choice. Donna Cross -- My book group has recently chosen to read Pope Joan for our next book. It was recommended by another group as the best book they had read in the last 4 years -- since the group started. Everyone in the group liked it which is a rare thing. That group also enjoyed having a speakerphone conversation with you so I am hoping to set up the same thing for our group. Does it have to be a certain size group? Our group has 8-12 people. We meet on Wednesday mornings and the next meeting is February 20, 2002. I hope you are available. Thanks for this opportunity. Heather

I am a French 3 student at Baylor School. I had to read your book for my class. It is very interesting because it relates to a lot of the things that we are talking about in my bible study right now and some of the things that I read about in your book have also come up in my english class lately. I greatly enjoyed reading your book and I have recommended it to some of my friends. Thank You. ~Kirby

Hi Donna- I met you at Bean's house then you spoke with my Honeoye Book Club. I was just wondering the status of the movie. The last I knew there was a conflict because of a TV mini-series. Did that get resolved and can we expect the movie sometime soon, I hope? Hope all is well and your next book is coming along - can't wait. Betsy Archibald

Donna, Thank you so much once again for joining us last evening. It was a thrill for the entire group. Everyone raved as they left last evening, and I'm sure THIS meeting will be considered the highlight of the Book Club for a long time to come. The only problem is now, they told me as they left, they expect the same level of excitement every time I host the club. I don't think I can follow this one with anything more, except possibly when I get my own book published. It was so interesting to hear you tell of all that went into making this such a special book. I was especially interested to hear how it had changed you. I think any writing is a process we grow with, but Pope Joan has obviously deeply affected your life. Good luck on your future projects. We are all eager to see Pope Joan on the big screen and to read your next book when it comes out. Thank you once again. I admire you greatly as a writer and this was an especially rewarding experience for me. Gail Shoemaker

Dear Mrs. Cross, I´m an 18 year old girl from Germany. I´m attending the German "Gymnasium" and I will pass my exams in june. My advanced curses are German and English. In German I have to present a book. Therefor I have chosen your book "Pope Joan", because in my opinion it´s a really interesting and exciting book. I needed only a few days to read it. The book fascinated me very much and so I have decided to present it to my classmates. I want to make them understand, what the topic of the book is. In addition to this I also would like to give them some background information about the book, its author and the reason what made you write such a book. But I have got a serious problem. I could nowhere find anything about your biography. So I have got a request. Please send me some background information about you and the book. It´s very important for my A-level. I hope you will help me!!! Thank you very much. yours faithfully Patricia Laukó

Dear Mr. Cross!! I'm 17 years old and from Austria. I read your book about Pope Joan and I was very fascinated. So I would make a presentation about you and your book in schol. But when i looked in the Internet there aren't any informations about yourself. And so I write to you, hopefully to get more informations about the brilliant writer who had written such a good book and I'm sorry that I write to you in such a bad English. I would learn it better!! Maybe I get an answer. With friendly greetings from Austria!! By

Dear Donna, Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us by speakerphone last Thursday evening. Members of our "Literary Rendez-Vous" truly enjoyed the experience! We were fascinated to hear all about the script writing and look forward to seeing the movie. We are all curious about your next novel; trying to guess who your mystery lady is. We hope we can do another speakerphone chat with that novel! I wish you the best of luck in all your projects. Regards, Lise Brosseau Pierrefonds Dollard-des-Ormeaux Intermunicipal Library

Dear Donna, One more question...do you have a fan club? ;o) After our speakerphone chat with our book reading group tonight, I think there are about 16 new members in Middletown, Maryland!!! You were wonderful. We had about 15 minutes to wrap up after saying goodbye to you and the general consensus was that not only was your book wonderful but so are you! We thoroughly enjoyed our discussion with you. Thank you so much for taking the time to call and chat with us. We've had some controversy over the choice of books we've read together as a group but everyone really, really enjoyed yours. It was nice to finally have a truly good one to discuss! Everyone was writing feverishly as you were naming books that would be worth reading. We're going to have some lists being passed around to make sure everyone has the complete list. Now, you need to get back to writing that next book of yours that we're all so anxious to read! Warmly, Victoria Breeden Library Associate Middletown Branch Library Frederick County Public Libraries

Dear Ms. Cross, I am a french 3 student from Baylor school and I would just like to tell you how much i enjoyed your book. At first I didn't think it would be that interesting, but after the first page, I was so into it I couldn't put it down. I finished it in about three days! My absolute favorite parts in the book were about Joan and Gerold. From the moment he took her in, I was secretly wishing that he would fall in love with her. I had to stop myself numerous times from flipping forward to see if they would eventually end up together. Did you add Gerold in just to make it interesting? Either way I completely loved his character! I've already started reading this book over, and i'm sure I will read it more than twice! I'm so glad that we're required to read French history books this year, because if we hadn't have been I would have never found this amazing book. I just wanted to compliment you on your extraordiary writing, and I was hoping that if you had written any other books you would tell me those titles. If you haven't written any other books, I really want to encourage you to think about maybe writing another one because I'd go buy it in a second! Thanks! -Lauren

Hi Donna, What a wonderful book you wrote. I have a question: Somewhere I read that in the end Joan was dragged by her horse to her death. In your book I didn't find this story. Is there any historical proof to it ? Thank you, Moshe
