I trust that we're still on for your call to our book club on January 11th.
Word of how much fun it was to talk with you in my other book club quickly
spread, and this group is really looking forward to participating. Several had
read your book before it was put on our list and highly recommended it to the
others who are reading it avidly. They'll have lots of questions about Pope Joan
and your writing process. I'll be really interested to see how this group's call
is different from my other book club's.

Hello Mrs. Cross, i'm a college student from germany and i have to write a
diploma work in the german advanced course about the german translation of your
novel 'pope joan' according to the middle age.i have a couple of questions which
i need to be answered by you till next time. The first one is: what were your
reasons for writting the novel 'pope joan'? Furthermore i would like to know if
there exist differences between the historical background and the novel you
wrote? This question may be very interesting for me because it would be the main
part of my work. It would be very nice when you answer my questions via e-mail,
because its very difficult with the telephone way. Thank you very much and a
happy new year. Sincerely yours,Daniela

Hello, Donna "Pope Joan" was a wonderful read. I love historical fiction
although you say this is written in just novel form still it depicts the era
very well. I find a very plausible argument for the exsistence of a woman
Pope in your book and why the church would want to bury the evidence.
Hopefully we are moving forward in an evolving society where the suppresion
of women will come to a complete end, whether in the religious or secular
world. Peace, Love and Light gerard

I really enjoyed your talk today at the TownHall Lecture in North Jersey.
You are a wonderful speaker.(I belong to Toastmasters International) I had
heard of the book and was not interested because I read nonfiction; however,
after hearing you and your research I will read this book.

Dear Donna, I am writing on behalf of the
"two-part-questions-Israeli-book-club" - to say we had a wonderfully
thought-provoking, Intriguing and most of all - fun experience talking to
you on the phone. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all our
questions and discuss your ideas and ours. We did actually feel as if you
are in the room with us, and we learned a lot from our discussion with you.
We now feel that our book club has "grown up" significantly. Also - word
goes around that our group has interesting meetings - and now everyone want
to join us.... Thank you so much - we will never forget. We are waiting
impatiently for the release of your next book, and promise to be your
dedicated P.R women in Israel. Yours, All of us.

Dear ms. cross. I am 17 years old and i just finished your book 'pope
joan'. I really loved it and you are a awsome writer. And I think it is very
important to write about women in the middelages, because eventhough the men
thought women can't do anything exept getting children, they were [are] just
as intelligent as the men. And it is a pity that the church has left the
story of a female pope out, because it might had changed the female role in
the old ages in a positive way.

Dear Ms. Cross, Years ago I encouraged high school students to read your
book and they were fascinated by the story. It so happened at that same time
(around 1998 or 1999)that you were a speaker for the public library in
Bloomington,IN and we (students and I) went to hear you. You autographed the
North library copy and unfortunately when I tried to check it out for a
student this year, our library copy was missing. I have since replaced it,
and I was wondering if I set you a copy can you autograph this new copy? I
have often talked with my high schoolers about the power of fiction in that
it sparks at times a "reinvestigation" into "legends". Your novel has indeed
been such an example. I continue to encourage our high school readers to
pick up this book and engage in lively dialogue about "historical" events
that are perhaps hidden. Thanks for a great novel.

All the folks of the "somanyboookssolittletimebookclub" thank you for an
extraordinary book, club meeting and speakerphone experience on Thursday
Oct. 19th! You expressed so well your cultural research and motivational
insights into this book's period and characters that you truly created an
aliveness throughout the reading. And, enriched by the phone conversation,
we all came away with a much richer understanding and appreciation of our
own circumstances as well! We're sharing your anticipation of Pope Joan the
new movie and hope it will be a success on the many levels it could well
attain! Thank you so much!

the book. I can hardly wait for the movie; I hope Hollywood doesn't

What a pleasure to have you visit with our "little Texas town" book club!
I had never been a part of anything like this before. We had nineteen
members present for this meeting and every one was thrilled with Pope Joan.
It is such a joy to read a book well-written from every aspect. I knew
little about this period of history and the story has prompted me to begin
an investigation of that era. Most of us are woefully ignorant about
specific times in the past, therefore we fail to see how much and how little
that history has and does affect us. Thank you. I look forward to the movie
and the next book. Thanks for coming to the "boonies." Gayle

My book club in Burns, Oregon is discussing Pope Joan a week from today;
every single copy in our book store was sold! I first discovered Pope Joan
three years ago at the Camas, Washington Library's book club and it started
me thinking: thinking about the Catholic Church, the impact of the Dark
Ages, especially on women, and my own life. Since I am a cradle Catholic,
the Camas group was concerned I find the book offensive but absolutely not!
I have long thought the Catholic Church to be a male-dominated force and, of
course, "Mother" Church vehemently denies the possibility of a woman pope.
Then, immediately afterwards, I went to Ireland, my first trip abroad, and
discovered the ancient and the old. I appreciated what I saw so much more
because of your book. Thank you again.

Hi, We are a group of women (30-45 years old), all native English speakers
living in Israel (some originally from Britain, some American, and one - me -
native Israeli). A few months ago we started a book-club, meeting once every
month to discuss a book we have all agreed to read. My mother bought me Pope
Joan, and I couldn't stop reading it!. I then enthusiastically recommended it to
the group, and we are scheduled to discuss the book on October 24th. If it is
at all possible to have a chat by speakerphone with Donna Woolfolk Cross on that
date or another, we would be most grateful. We are a small group (approx. 8
participants). Thank you very much, Ms. Woolfolk Cross, for an amazing reading

I just this very minute finished the book. I so enjoyed it. It was exciting
and a page turner. Of course, Diane Sawyer's “ABC Primetime” piece on it got my
attention and I read the book. It was exciting how Pope Joan was able to
accomplish her life's objective of being educated and even achieve successes
beyond her imagination. She was a woman, like so many, who have had to manage
life in order to achieve what we have set out to do. Well done. This movie I

Our book club has met once a month for more than six years. The "founders"
read Pope Joan in September 2001 and LOVED it. Indeed, I have yet to read
another book that so captured my interest and thoughts. (I found myself
"sneaking into the bathroom" to get away from my children so I could have more
time to read it!) Yearly our club reminisces and each of us relates what are our
"top" picks annually and since inception. Pope Joan always comes out on top of
the since inception list. Those of us who already love the book want to read it
again and hear from you, Donna; and, we want to introduce your work to the newer
members. You might enjoy hearing that there is an "inner circle" joke of sorts
regarding your book: Each month one of the first questions the moderator usually
asks is "Did you like Book "X" and this writer ALWAYS responds: "Well, it isn't
Pope Joan but . . ." I am looking forward to sharing this book with new members
and my daughters, when they are old enough to read it. I have given your book as
a gift many times. I would be honored to speak with you about it by
speakerphone. We all would be SO excited and you would be our first "live chat"
with an author. If these dates I provided on the chat request form don't work,
we can give you more. Thank you SO much for your wonderful novel and this chance
to "meet" you.

I originally learned of Pope Joan the novel through a website of recommended
historical fiction novels. Since I first read it, about four years ago, I have
been recommending it to everyone I know. I am a librarian and we read this book
about two years ago for our book group on Mrs. Cross called and talked to us. It
was a great experience. I am now in the process of starting a new book group and
this is going to be our kick-off book. I know that having the author join us by
speakerphone during the discussion would, once again, greatly enhance the
experience for everyone in the group.

I loved Pope Joan! I am a Catholic and had never heard of her until I
happened to find this book while just browsing in a bookstore. Ms. Cross, thank
you so much for writing this book. I have always had a great thirst for
learning, a voracious reading appetite, and I grew up in a very sexist and
anti-female small town area. In class discussions, I would argue against all
types of ignorant and antiquated views from my male (and some female)
classmates. When I read about Joan debating and talking circles around her
opponents, I felt like I was reading about myself (although I would never be
near as great as Joan!) Pope Joan has inspired me to read more about the
popes, the antipopes (popes that became so by illegitimate or illegal means and
thus are not considered to be real popes), and the history of the Church. I
think that the truth about Joan may be in the Vatican, in the Secret Archives
that are only for the Pope's use (yes they are actually called 'secret'). From
what I've read, only the Pope can give permission for other priests, scholars,
etc to go in - usually they can only look in certain sections of the archives
and are admitted only if they are looking into a specific topic, so it is very
easy to make sure that no one finds out any undesirable history. I'm not
bringing up these things because I'm a conspiracy nut (I'm not), or because I
hate the Catholic Church (I'm Catholic, I love and respect the Church, but I
think for myself just like many Catholics do - this Pope Joan book is NOT
anti-Catholic!) I'm just bringing it up because it's interesting, and because
I wish we could learn about the church history with ALL of the information. But
I guess 'some ideas are dangerous', right? :) Anyway, hopefully, the wishes of
Joan will one day be completely fulfilled, not just women’s ability to
read/learn or to be our own master or to have the rights that we have today, but
also to become priests if that be our calling.

My best friend is from Germany (not a member of our bookclub) and she read the book (in German) several years ago. She told me it was her all-time FAVORITE book and so I recommended it to our group after the first 4 books we read were not so great. So far the comments coming back from the group have all been that this is the BEST!

Dear Ms. Cross - In March of this year stopped for a book sigining at
Creekside Books and Coffee in Skaneateles, New York. The shop is owned and
operated by a very close friend of mine, Erika Davis. During a recent visit to
see her, she recommened and lent me her signed copy of "Pope Joan" which I
thoroughly enjoyed and can not stop recommending! Unfortunately, the
personalized copy, a peper back, was literally destroyed by teething children,
sun lotion, etc...I feel very badly and would like to replace her book. The
orignal inscription, dated 3/4/06, reads: "For Erika, another lover of books -
and a woman who knows how to make things happen! With Admiration - Donna
Woolfolk Cross" Would it be possible to purchase another copy of the book, have
you sign it and pay to have it shipped to Erika? Thank you in advance for your

Dear Ms. Cross, I first heard and read your wonderful book while I was
working at the Vatican Exhibit Gift Shop during its stay at the Art Museum in
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, about 2 years ago. It was interesting that we had
several titles in the store, but not yours. We did have a semi-official type
poster with the Popes in historical order for sale. Whenever possible, I would
comment to prospective purchasers that Pope Joan was omitted. During my time
working there I shared my copy of your book with many other Museum staff members
to their delight. I hope we will be able to meet while you are here in FB in
October. In addition, my partner, Jose Garcia, used to be a priest and studied
and worked in Rome many years ago and is an accomplished historian of many of
behind-the-scenes Vatican exploits. I'm sure he could share some interesting
stories with you. Again, thank you for writing your book. See you on Amelia
Island in October. Tony McAdoo & Jose Garcia

Thank you for making me the heroine of the Artsy book club at our
speakerphone discussion tonight. If anyone ever asks again, "what of yourself is
in this book?", feel free to say that it is the wit and keen intelligence of
Joan herself! You should know how very happy you left us this evening. We loved
the escape into another world you gave us in Pope Joan, and tonight for a while
we were able to escape again. We spoke of how different and yet unchanged men are
in ignorance and cruelty making a hell on earth. We wondered if women were in
power, would we be so quick to kill each other's children?
We so appreciated your time, your careful research, your wealth of knowledge
and your generosity to share with us. We look forward to being able to read your
next book. You can be sure that the minute we can we will be buying it! Your
admiring audience is waiting.

I purchased Poap Joan last Wednesday based on the recommendation of a friend
and have enjoyed reading it very much--I especially historial fiction/fact books
where the authors have done their research and then share it with their readers
in footnote form at the back or just by an elaborated list of their sources. As
a former English teacher who could not convince my students of the obligation to
provide proper documentation for their researched papers and the ability to
write about historical/critical insights with creativity, I loved having popular
pieces of literature to share with them as writing samples. My only quibble is
really the art chosen for the new cover edition.... the artwork resembles a
young Elizabeth I much more than the ephemeral Joan of the novel…

The Bibliophillies really enjoyed spending Wednesday evening with you discussing
your fantastic book by speakerphone. There were 12 of us in attendance which is
the largest crowd we have had in four years because everyone was so excited to
be able to chat with the author - and to discuss a book that we all enjoyed.
There was a retired Episcopal priest with us who has recommended the book to her
former church to read at their book club. Before you called, we were talking
about the intinction part in the book. That is still an "issue" in today's
church.
We are looking forward to the movie and have our fingers crossed that those
tacky Hollywood types do it justice. Meanwhile, keep writing so that we will
have another one of your books to read and discuss. We'll be on the lookout for
the next one...We would love to meet you some day - The Junior League of
Richmond does a book and author dinner every year. Do you ever do any of those?
Thank you, again! Joan (not of the Pope nor Arc) Dalrymple

read Pope Joan. I am so grateful that I did not judge the book by its
cover! I am not an avid reader, so it takes a lot to keep me going. Your novel
Pope Joan did just this. Wonderfully written, the story gripped me and wouldn't
let go.

so I was looking for fodder for our book group discussion, and just now found
out that we could add you to the discussion. I am sure that I am asking way too
late, but it never hurts to try! I heard about the story of Pope Joan through a
show on the History Channel. Not two weeks later, one of my best friends told me
that she was reading it for her book club. She really enjoyed it, so I chose it
for mine. I haven't yet decided the "turn" the discussion will take - how
females were treated then, how religion was viewed (and in my mind, what that
means for the devout today), the romance part of it, etc. So many things to talk
about, so little time.... Anyhow, thanks for the opportunity! Jennifer

Hello, I am writing a paper about Cross' discussion about Pope Joan at Winona
State University today. She mentioned that the official reasoning for papal
processions to go around where Pope Joan died didn't appear to be true because
of the master of ceremonies' journal. I think she mentioned it, but what did she
uncover?? Thanks, Amber Dulek

re-read it several times since then. The book ranks extremely high on my list of
favorites and has been a frequent recommendation to others. Never having lived
in those dark ages, I would say that you have depicted a very possible scenario.
Ultimately I do believe that Pope Joan existed - there are too many facts,
mentions and traditions (or changes thereof) to declare it a 'fable'. I can't
wait to read your next book!

Dear Donna-
Wow!! The women of the “Boulder Book Club” are permanent fans of yours. We
LOVED our speakerphone chat with you. It was fascinating to hear about your
research and the many challenges and decisions you faced while writing about
Pope Joan. You did a wonderful job of bringing us into your world of the 9th
century. We were so invigorated by your candor and enthusiasm; we are already
looking forward to your next book!!
We would like to invite you to come to Boulder to make an “appearance” in this
area –you would get a wonderful audience. Let me know if we can help facilitate
this in any way. To make up for us keeping you on the phone so long during our
chat, we would love to host you for dinner while you are here. J
We were also wondering if you would share some of your favorite titles with us,
specifically those in the historical fiction category.
Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

Dear Donna, Congratulations on your book! It is a fascinating subject worthy of
intense scrutiny. I am a tourguide in Rome and I have told the story of Pope
Joan for years and point out some symbolism that relates to her in St. Peter's.
At one time, many years ago I read a reference to a marker in Rome on the spot
where she was stoned to death. Do you know of this marker or did you come across
mention of it in your studies? I would be incredibly appreciative if you can let
me know. If you come to Rome, please do not hesitate to look me up. I give

In the 1970's I was doing volunteer work in a Catholic school when I came across
an article about Pope Joan in a book of unknown facts. I told the priest about
the article and asked him if the information was true. He told me that it was
but that they don't talk about it. Later in years(1990's)while I was in college,
I did a report about Pope Joan. I mentioned this to the same priest and he then
told me that the information was not true. I told him that he had told me that
it was true. He stilled denied it and walked away from me. I was and still am
very much interested in Pope Joan. My husband is also and we talk to a lot of
people about her. I have read several books about her and I look forward to
reading the book by Donna Cross. I wanted to watch the TV program but

I have enjoyed very much reading your book, because you add tenderness and
poetry to an enormous work of research. Many readers might think this all is
just a marvelous legend, but it really happened on the 9th century (I have
recently finished reading HISTOIRE DES PAPES ET DES ROIS by Maurice la Châtre).
Weird as it may seem, the Church was more reluctant to accept a female pope than
others who were murderers or sodomists. I recommend your book especially to
men, because nowadays feminism is just the best form of humanism.

Time: 04:26 AMAs a former protestant Christian (now Atheist) I found
your book on Pope Joan fascinating. Even though it calls into doubt a lot of
core religious beliefs, I think it's a good thing, and I admire that you've done
so with so much respect for your subject. I Have been hearing a lot about the
controversy surrounding "The Da Vinci Code", and having read both Brown's book
and yours, I think yours is the better, more plausible story. I'll be genuinely
looking forward to the movie of Pope Joan, but skeptically awaiting "Da Vinci".
I can only hope that the studio treats the story with the respect and reverence
that you have, and that it deserves. Researching a new story, even one this
controversial, is not a bad thing, nor do I believe you were counselling against
the church itself, or its teachings, merely spreading new light on a
possibility.
Thanks for opening up some eyes, and along the way giving people something new
to think about, including yours truly.

At the age of thirteen I was given a book by my Grandmother that would alter
the course of my life forever. That book was Pope Joan. The book Pope Joan
was an inspiration to me to fulfill all my dreams, and let no obstacles
stand in my way. The main character, Joan, gave me hope and a new found
understanding of what I will be able to achieve if I work hard enough and
set my mind on my future goals. I am now 21 years old and a National Honor
Society student. I am pursuing my goal to become a Doctor of nuclear
medicine. Throughout the course of my life I know that the book, Pope Joan,
has been one of the main influences of my high and college years. She has
given me the strength to achieve goals that I thought were once out of my
grasp. I will never forget the book Pope Joan for it has changed me in so
many astounding ways as a young women.

I hope the piece on ABC Primetime sends the sales of Pope Joan
skyrocketing; it would make me go buy the book if I didn't already have it. I
am looking forward to the film and, most of all, to your next book. Thanks again
for the chance to chat. I think the Naples Library Book Group's best and most
interesting meeting was our speakerphone chat with you. What a brilliant idea!
Best of luck in what is to come. We will surely be hearing more of you.

I hope that you are able to easily disregard some of the negative comments
that are being posted here by those that categorically reject anything that
challenges their belief system as heresy. It is their way of coping, and they
lash out to try and persuade others to think the way that they do. As the old
bumper sticker slogan says, "A Closed Mind is a Wonderful Thing to Lose."

teacher I ever had! Her method of enlightening impressionable students equals
her captivating delivery on the printed page to her readers. Seeing "Primetime"
this evening and Donna's smiling face again brought a sense of pride, gratitude
and happiness. It was a joy feeling the youth and optimism of being a lucky
student again! Thank you!

We are thrilled that you are willing to take the time to chat with our book
club by speakerphone. Thank you very much! The early comments I received from
a few of my fellow book club members (we try very hard not to discuss the books
in advance of the meetings) were: “intriguing”, “I couldn’t put it down”,
“thought provoking” “the best historical fiction I have ever read”, “I want my
daughter and all of her friends to read it” …..
We can’t wait to meet and further discuss your novel, as we are anxiously
awaiting a special evening with you. Again, many thanks!

Dear Ms Cross, I've finished reading "Pope Joan"
(in German, I have to confess) in the early morning and still can't think on
anything else (although it's already evening now). THE BOOK IS JUST
GREAT!!!!! I've been reading hundreds of books already but can't remember of
being moved so deeply ever before! As I'm an historian (who concentrats on
the Early Modern Period rather than on the Early Middle Ages), I'd really
like to know your sources. Did you come to Europe to get original sources?
Did you have to learn Latin or could you manage the language problem by
other means? Have you visited the historical places? Did you speak to
somebody from the Vatican? Can you tell me some scientific literature that
proves the existence of Joan? I'm very pleased to read there will be a film
about the story - but will it be presented in Europe as well? I hope so!!!
Thanks for the great pleasure you gave me with "Pope Joan"!!! Best regards,
Marion Luger

The lies that began from the father of lies, the
father of sin, will continue until the end of time...Therefore, we expect
you to hit us with every lie possible, (books, movies chat rooms, tv etc.)
and we will continue to survive as we have in the past. We already have the
victory, won for us by Jesus. We will follow Him into the mockery, mire,
insults and say, "thank You Jesus for allowing us to suffer just a tiny bit
in imitation of our Beloved Lord." Satan hates the Catholic Church and he
continues to try to undermine everything that is Holy. You are interceding
for him by writing lies. Your book has not been written to teach truth but
to plant doubt in the minds of others and of course to make money which is
the god of our age. The Da Vinci code can be burned right along with your
book. There are now more than 30,000 different Protestant Churches and they
are growing daily. But there is only One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic
Church. "And upon this Rock I will build my Church"--singular, not plural.

I read Pope Joan a few years ago and found it
fascinating. I passed it to some of my younger co-workers. I was amazed
yesterday when someone stopped to tell me that there was going to be
something about Pope Joan on ABC Primetime Live this Thursday. She said when
she saw the ad it reminded her of that great book I had loaned her. It's
nice when there is something written this well that it stays with people
long after you put the book down.

I can't begin to tell you how much our book club
enjoyed our speakerphone chat with you! It was so enlightening to hear what
went into the research of Pope Joan. Personally, I can't imagine the Latin
poem you persevered through to bring us the medicinal remedies of our
heroine's time. What an incredible discovery along with the monastery's
herbal garden map! We were also captivated by the actual history and facts
about Pope Joan, and loved hearing from the "horse's mouth" about things we
didn't pick up on when we read the story. You wrote such a plausible story
to explain such an extraordinary piece of history. Thank you again for
joining our book club meeting. We're looking forward to both the movie and
to your next novel!

I read the book at the suggestion of a friend (the founding member of our
BOOK club), and we both suggested it for this year's reading list. We REALLY
enjoyed it, and we expect a lively discussion! We generally meet on the 3rd
Thursday of the month, so any 3rd Thursday evening after 7:30 pm eastern
would be great for a speakerphone chat with the author. Thanks for
considering us!

The idea that there really was a female Pope is
truly ridiculous and totally without merit. It is especially preposterous
considering that it was debunked in the mid-17th century by David Blondel
who was, ironically, a Protestant, who sugg
